Favorite Picture Book Readings: April 2015

I spent much of April creating a summer literacy curriculum. I had to got to read a TON of books while planning. I played around with weekly themes (mostly based on field trips) and finally settled on Fun and Games, Friends, Nature, Poetry, Summer, Camping, Math, America, Community, and Zoo. Here are some of my favorite books from my reading and planning:

Flashlight by Lizi Boyd
This is a fun wordless book about a boy shining his flashlight on creatures in the woods.

That's a Possibility!: A Book About What Might Happen by Bruce Goldstone
I liked that this book made probability accessible to young kids. The author covers terms such as "possibility", "likely", and "impossible". It's bright, colorful and engaging.

Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett
I loved this book so much I Googled Mac Barnett and found this TED Talk and now I love him. The Sam and Dave book is one of those books where the illustrations shed more light on the story. Kids will have to pay attention and will be groaning at Sam and Dave's choices.

The Jacket by Kirsten Hall
This is a cute book about a book. First it's a lonely book, then it's loved, then it's in trouble.

My Teacher is a Monster by Peter Brown
What kid wouldn't love this title? Turns out to be a sweet (ish) story about a boy and his teacher. Another book where kids should look closely at the illustrations!

Lemonade and Other Poems Squeezed from a Single Word by Bob Raczka
What's that, you don't like poetry? Don't worry. This book will fix that problem! Poems made from one word! I like this book because I think it's a great way to encourage kids to write and read poetry.

175 Best Camp Games: A Handbook for Leaders by Kathleen Fraser, Laura Fraser, and Mary Fraser
I found a ton of great group games and activities in this book. There are active games, strategy games, getting-to-know-you games, and more. There are clear directions and lots of tips for organizing and working with different groups of kids.

I hope you take the time to check out at least one of these books. If you read one, let me know what you think. If you have shared one of these titles with kids, let me know how they reacted.

Happy reading!
